NDC’s Gyakye Quayson wins Assin North seat again

The Assin North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court declared the election of the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson unconstitutional, null and void

James Gyakye Quayson, the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress, has retained the Assin North seat for the NDC.

Gyakye Quayson garnered 17,245 votes (57.56%) to beat his main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who won 12,630 (42.15%) of the total votes cast.

The candidate of Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Bernice Enyonam Sefenu won 87 votes, representing 0.29% of the total cast.

The total valid votes were 29,962 and the total number of votes cast was 30,418. Rejected ballots were 456 and the turnout was 74.23%.

The constituency has 40,978 registered voters.

Arrests

Meanwhile, five individuals involved in activities that posed a threat to the by-election in Assin North have been apprehended by the police.

Three of them were involved in assaults, and two others were apprehended for impersonating security personnel.

One individual was wearing a police uniform while the other was dressed in military tactical gear.

“Nobody has been shot at”

No person or vehicle has been shot at within Assin North, the police said in an update on the by-election before the polls closed in the constituency.

The police said they had deployed adequate personnel throughout the constituency to ensure security, law and order for the whole duration of the election and beyond.

“The police, however, recorded pockets of incidents, including an alleged incident of an individual shooting into the air. We wish to state that no person or vehicle has been shot at within the constituency,” the police said in a post on Facebook.

“All the recorded incidents are being investigated and police have also arrested some suspects who are in custody assisting our investigation,” the post said.
