Nelson Boateng, the chief executive of Nelplast Eco Ghana Ltd has kicked against the ban of single-use plastics from Ghana, although it is contributing to perennial flooding in the country.
About 2.58 million metric tonnes of raw plastics are imported into Ghana annually, and 73% of that ends up as waste, while only 19% is re-used, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (22 August), Boateng called for attitudinal change in the disposal of single-use plastics.
“First of all banning the plastic is not the solution, not because I need the materials to work, I can use other materials to produce my bricks, the problem is behavioural change towards the disposal of plastics,” Boateng said.
“I heard earlier on that let’s replace plastic with paper,” he said. “If you have the attitude of disposing off plastics anyhow, you will equally dispose of papers like that, and do you know the amount of water you need? So, I think the change of attitude is the way to go,” he said.
