All final-year senior high school day students are expected to stay on campus with boarders, following the reopening of schools by President Akufo-Addo.
Detailing various new protocols during a press conference at the Ministry of Information in Accra today, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Education, said the measures that the government has put in place will help to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“We are not going to provide buses because the health experts tell us that the buses get too crowded and it would be better if [students] even walk to school. But we will ensure that the necessary things are done to prevent the spread of the virus in the schools.
“Senior high schools will reopen on 22 June and there will be no visiting allowed.
“They will be there for academic work for six weeks and do their West African Examinations Council, that is the ‘Ghana Exams’, for five weeks.”
According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, school officials are to ensure that there are washing facilities available, including washable and reusable face masks for all students and staff. In addition, all educational institutions must be disinfected from time to time.
“All classes are to be split, with not more than 25 students in a class. Day schools will have enhanced daily health protocols.
“Dining will be in batches in boarding schools. Schools will be unavailable for religious activities and no sports and sporting events are allowed,” the Education Minister emphasised.
