2019 National Farmers Day -Ayekoo to our farmers

On 6th December 2019, we celebrate the 35th edition of Ghana’s National Farmers’ Day. A day set aside by the Ministry of food and Agriculture back in 1988 to honour farmers and fishermen.

This is in respect of their efforts in feeding the nation and the contributions of the agricultural sector to the development of the Ghanaian economy. Venue for 2019 National Farmers’ Day grand durbar is Ho in the Volta region.

Ayekoo to all farmers

Ayekoo to all farmers and fishermen. You are worth celebrating, whether big or small. Also congratulations to all the award winners for the year. Our farmers labor continuously from year to year to ensure there is food in the country, Yet, they get negligible reward for their efforts. As a result, farming has become unattractive to young people.

As a nation, we ought to correct this error in perception. Hence, recognition for farmers must go beyond celebrating the national farmers day.

Government Interventions to farmers

However, Government’s emphasis for 2019’s Natiional farmers Day is to create opportunity for farmers to reap more benefits from interventions and initiatives in the agricultural sector. Interventions such as planting for food and jobs, supply of fertilizers and equipment and greenhouse initiative are to support farmers. Others include construction of 30 warehouse facilities across the country. Each facility boasts of 1000 metric tonnnes capacity to create additional storage space for farm produce.

Likewise the nation witnessed bumper harvest both in 2018 and 2019, with a recent announcement of a glut in rice production. This is not sheer luck but due to the consistent efforts of players in the agricultural sector.

The theme for 2019’s National Farmers Day celebration is “Enhancing small scale agriculture towards agribusiness development”. Government intends to gradually shift the focus of Agriculture in Ghana from subsistence farming to agri-business using the 2019 national Farmers day as a starting point.
