An independent political analyst, Ndaraku Ukechukwu has said the upcoming elections in Nigeria will be based on competence rather than tribe or religion.
Nigeria’s outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after nearly eight years in power amid a backdrop of chaos and widespread unrest, as many people are unable to access the cash they need to buy food because of a botched roll-out of new banknotes.
A total of 18 candidates are campaigning for the top job, but only three have a realistic chance of winning, according to opinion polls.
Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (21 February), Ukechukwu said: “Nigeria has come a long way and this time around, Nigerians are looking at competence.”
“Nigeria used to be a highly tribalised terrain but today, you have people campaigning outside their religion and tribe. For me, I see it as a plus.”
“I think when we want to look at who’s most qualified, I think we should look towards the person’s performance based on international activities and how he handles people outside his tribe,” he told the host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.
