Locals at Nkwanta in the Oti Region on Friday lynched Sherrif Nurudeen, 27, for allegedly being caught stealing, the police confirmed.

The police have conveyed his remains from the crime scene for preservation at the morgue.

Speaking to Asaase News on Friday, the crime officer for Nkwanta South, Lawrence Wiafi said investigations have since begun into the incident.

“Even though he was a suspected thief, the residents should not have taken the law into their own hands by beating him to death because it’s against human rights,” the police investigator said.

Wiafi has appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands when they suspect an individual involved in a suspected crime.

He said the public should believe in the police and report such issues to the security services.
