“No room for panic”, Kumasi clergymen walk for peace, assures full support for EC

The religious leaders defied Tuesday's rains and marched through the streets of the Ashanti Regional capital voicing their unwavering support for the Electoral Commission (EC)

The Coalition of Religious Clergymen, comprising both Christian and Muslim leaders have embarked on a peaceful walk in Kumasi to promote peace ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The religious leaders defied Tuesday’s rains and marched through the streets of the Ashanti Regional capital voicing their unwavering support for the Electoral Commission (EC) emphasizing their confidence in its ability to deliver credible elections.

Co-convener of the coalition Rev. Dr Enoch Kwabena Nketia who read a statement at the EC’s Kumasi office said, “We highly value the critical role of the EC in the democratic principles that have made Ghana the shining star of Africa since the return of democratic rule. We declare publicly our trust in the EC’s ability to execute its constitutional mandate without fear or favour.”

“There should be no room for panic or fear from any political party, institution, or stakeholder. The EC, backed by its long-standing experience and professional competence, can conduct a free, fair, and transparent election. We urge citizens to provide the EC with the support to function effectively”, he added.

The march happened on a day when the EC was holding a historic Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with political parties and other interest groups on concerns about the voters’ register. Ashanti Regional Director of the EC Mr Francis Osei Nsiah reassured the clergymen of free and fair elections.

“We are going to forward this message to the management in Accra. And I want to assure them that we will go by the rules of the game, and we will make sure that we will not deviate. So, we are encouraged by this support”, Nsiah said.
