North East Region: Former MP for Yagaba-Kubori wins NDC chairmanship slot

The former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament garnered 132 votes out of 214 valid votes cast with one rejected vote

Abdul Rauf Ibrahim Tanko, the former Member of Parliament for the Yagaba-Kubori constituency in the North East Region has been elected as the North East regional chairman for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The chairman-elect first stepped into Parliament in 2005.

He won the 2008 elections after his first term and served another term as a lawmaker from 2009 to 2012.

Tanko lost in 2012 elections to Ussif Mustapha, the current Minister for Youth and Sports after serving eight years in office.

In 2016, Tanko returned and contested the seat again where he won against Ussif Mustapha in that election and went back to Parliament.

Tanko, served as a Member of Parliament for 12 years (not consecutively) after he was defeated by Ussif Mustapha in the 2020 elections.

The chairman-elect, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim Tanko garnered 132 votes out of 214 valid votes cast with one rejected vote.

His contenders, Alhassan Nantomah Sandow, the incumbent chairman polled 22 votes, Joseph Laabik 20 votes, and Saaka Abdul-Razak 40 votes.

The regional delegates conference was held at the Nalerigu Senior High School dining hall, where a total of 43 aspirants aspired for 15 different portfolios in the North East Region.

The chairman-elect, in his acceptance speech, promised to work with all the new executives of the party in the region to win all the six seats in the North East Region.
