Police in the Volta region’s North Tongu district have launched an investigation into the murder of Sulley Hassan, a herdsman from Alabota, a farming community in the district.
Sulley was 40 years old. He was allegedly killed by a “notorious” community thug, Selase Dotse.
According to the assembly member for the area, Tse Jupiter Azietor, the son of the deceased (a minor), ran to his house to report to him about the confusion between his father (the deceased) and Selase (the suspect) on the grazing field.
What fueled the confusion?
The deceased’s son took his father’s cattle to graze but returned to report to his father that Selase had kept the animals hostage and killed one of them for no reason.
The deceased then followed up with his son to inquire why the attack on the animals occurred but Selase did not welcome the idea of Sulley and asked why he (Sulley) wanted to make the inquiries.
Selase was said to have left the scene and returned shortly with a sharp cutlass, suspected to be the one he used to kill the cow and attack Sulley.
Sulley’s son then ran into the community to inform the assembly member.
In a bizarre situation, the suspect butchered Sulley until he had his last breath, he then chopped off his head and bolted with the body and the head before the assemblyman and Sulley’s son returned to the scene.
What happened after the alleged murder?
The assembly member said, he immediately informed the elders and youth of the community and accompanied them to the house of the suspect, but he was not in the house.
They, however, found the beheaded body of Sulley near the suspect’s house.
According to the assemblyman, the youth of the community, under his auspices, went in search of the suspect and also reported the case to the Juapong Police Command.
The police, however, assisted the youth of the community in searching for Selase. Hours after the search, they apprehended Selase in another community called Agorveme.
The head of Sulley was found in his possession.
Police took over the case
The police, according to the assemblyman, collected the body with the chopped head and deposited the remains at the Tagadzi mortuary.
Investigators have since launched an investigation into the incident to pave the way for prosecution.
The Juapong District Police Commander, Superintendent Promise Agbanyo confirmed the incident but declined to comment further, saying he was not authorised to speak to the media.
