The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the timeline for the re-run of its parliamentary primary in the Walewale constituency, North East Region, following a recent court ruling.
On Monday (2 September), the Tamale High Court annulled the results of the party’s January primary, where Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, special advisor to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, narrowly defeated the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu.
Hajia Lariba had challenged the outcome, citing allegations of electoral irregularities and misconduct involving the NPP, Mahama, and the Electoral Commission (EC).
In response to the court’s decision, the NPP issued a statement on 2 September 2024, outlining the schedule for the rerun.
Nominations are set to open on Tuesday (3 September) and will close on Thursday (5 September) with the election taking place on Sunday (8 September).
Candidates who previously participated in the January primary and paid the filing fees will not be required to do so again.
However, new aspirants must obtain nomination forms from the party’s headquarters, paying a non-refundable application fee of GHC3,000 and a filing fee of GHC35,000.
The party also named the Elections Committee responsible for overseeing the rerun.
The committee will be chaired by Alhaji Haruna Mohammed, with Alhaji Nurudeen Fuseini as vice chair and Evans Nimako as secretary.
Other members include Hajia Safia Mohammed, the chairperson of the constituency council of elders, along with all constituency executives who will serve as ex-officio members.
