The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region says the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not have the moral fortitude to question the government’s execution of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road projects.
The NPP said the failure of the NDC’s past government to execute the road project in its eight years in power with 12 Members of Parliament out of the 15 constituencies, takes away their credibility to criticise any government interventions and projects in the region.
The National Democratic Congress in the Upper East Region in its recent maiden edition of the “upper East Must Know” series chastised the ruling government for the abandonment of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road and other key projects.
The opposition party accused the government of neglect, lack of commitment towards important projects and failure to honour promises after the contractor Queiroz Galvâo left the site.
The NDC said the contractor had left the site over the government’s failure to honour its financial obligations.
But speaking at a press conference to counter the accusations, the New Patriotic Party’s regional director of communications, Peter Ayinbisa, said the NDC was engaged in distorting facts to amass public sympathy and create disaffection towards the government.
He said the government had gone far in all aspects of the road project, with various portions of the project such as the construction of bridges, culverts, asphalting etc. reaching appreciable levels.
“The erroneous claims by the NDC that the entire stretch of the Bolga- Bawku-Polimakom Road was 54% work done is telling of how hollow and armchair nature of their research on this project. Our checks from the Ghana Highways Authority point to a contrary report of 64% of work done. The road to the main bridge is 90% complete. On the bypass, the quoted 6km of tarred road is untrue. The Highways authority states 8.5% of the 14km is tarred with work progressing steadily. The Missiga-Kulungungu road has been partly done.”
Ayinbisa said the Akufo-Addo-led administration deserves commendation for prioritising the completion of the project in spite of the meagre support the party enjoys from the region during elections.
“In 2012, John Mahama raked in some 274 019 votes, representing 66.43% of the votes in this region, yet he denied us such a critical project. On the other hand, Nana Addo received 120,814 votes, representing 29.29%. Is it not fair to argue that to whom much is given, much is expected?”, questioned Ayinbisa.
Ayinbisa stated that the government had not abandoned the road project.
He revealed that a crunch meeting, spearheaded by the Roads Ministry, had been held with the contractors which was going to path the way for work to begin soon.
“The ministry of roads has had a meeting with the contractor and he has been urged to come back to the site.”
