The police have said calm has been restored in Ofankor in the Greater Accra Region following a riot on Wednesday between suspected land guards and wood sellers.

Unconfirmed reports say one person died in the melee and several others injured. Eyewitnesses told Asaase News that gunshots were heard during the clashes resulting in the burning of car tyres and road blocks.

Multiple media reports say the land owner, whose premises the wood sellers have been operating on at Taifa junction – Muus Timber Market – wants to evict them to develop the property. However, the wood sellers are resisting, resulting in the clashes with the land guards.

A vehicle belonging to the land guards was vandalised, according to an eyewitness.

A statement issued by the police on Wednesday (20 September) said Investigation so far indicates that the riot was in relation to a land litigation issue.

Police have since strengthened security in the area and the road has been opened to normal traffic flow.

The police said investigations are still ongoing to get the perpetrators arrested to face justice.
