Oliver Barker-Vormawor arrested, say police

The police earlier launched a manhunt for Barker-Vormawor, on suspicion of committing various unlawful acts during a protest at the 37 Military Hospital road intersection in Accra

The police have arrested Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leader of the Democracy Hub group, an official statement from the Ghana Police Service has announced.

The police earlier launched a manhunt for Barker-Vormawor on suspicion of committing various unlawful acts during a protest blocking the road intersection of the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

He was pictured in a video clip, since gone viral, turning off the engine of a police van, taking the keys from the ignition and running away with them.

The police had earlier also arrested a number of Democracy Hub demonstrators who engaged in acts of lawlessness, including blocking the road, pushing over police crash barriers and obstructing traffic at the 37 intersection.

Three-day protest

Democracy Hub announced its intention to hold a three-day protest from 21-23 September 2024 at the Revolutionary Square, across Liberation Road from Jubilee House in Accra. The protest, organised under the theme “A New Constitution for a New Generation”, aims to turn a spotlight on pressing national issues.

In a formal statement, Democracy Hub confirmed that it has notified the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, in compliance with the Public Order Act 1994.

The group, known for its #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest campaigns, seeks to address socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption and the need for judicial independence.

“The purpose of this demonstration is to highlight several critical issues plaguing Ghanaian society,” the Democracy Hub statement read. “We remain committed to a peaceful and orderly protest, as we aim to shine a light on the need for transformative change in our nation.”

The group restated its intention to maintain peace and order during the event. It recalled the September 2023 #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, which led to the arrest of many demonstrators. Despite this, Democracy Hub said, it remains steadfast in advocating a more just and inclusive society through its protests this month.
