Opinion: An open letter to John Mahama; Stop talking from both sides of your mouth

Dear Mr Mahama, I am more than dumbfounded reading your Facebook post slamming the Electoral Commission over its decision not to allow party agents to observe the ongoing transfer of people from one area to another.

You have described this as a collusion between the EC and the ruling NPP to rig the 2024 elections. You see this as the EC’s avowed determination to help the NPP steal the outcome of the December 7 elections.

First, which of the Cis of the EC mandates political parties to present their agents to monitor or observe the transfer of voters? Where in our statute books have, the EC been charged to ensure that political parties bring agents to observe transfer processes?

The EC is enjoined to allow political parties to present agents to monitor or observe REGISTRATION EXERCISES, not transfer of voters. The EC was not under any compulsion to ask political parties to make available agents to observe the transfer process. It took that decision with good intentions, only for the exercise to be riddled with violence and chaos in some centres. This is why the EC withdrew the decision. It had no binding effects on the Commission.

If you are looking for someone to blame for this change of mind by the EC, blame your bloodthirsty party executives in Awutu Senya East Constituency (Kasoa), where the son of the Member of Parliament of the constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was stabbed by your party member.

But for the quick intervention of some people at the centre, the young man could have lost his life. Ato Koomson is at the hospital receiving treatment.

Mr Mahama, you seem to be diseased from the very ailment of forgetfulness you said Ghanaians were suffering from. Your retentive memory seems to have been affected with time. When you and your NDC were in government, you told us that no political party could influence the election because of the systems in place.

You further stated that people criticizing the EC should leave them alone to do their work because they are independent. Now you are not in government, and you are saying that the very things you said the Electoral Commission or any political party cannot do are possible.

What happened to their independence? What happened to the systems you said the Commission had put in place, making it impossible for the electoral body to rig elections for any political party?

What was not possible when you were in government, is now possible because your favourite EC Chairperson, She Who Must be Obeyed (Charlotte Osei), is not in charge of the Electoral Commission.

What has changed? You speak from both sides of your mouth. You are a personification of hypocrisy. If hypocrisy were a person, you’d be a perfect fit. You are emblematic of double standards.

This is the more reason why Ghanaians should never make the mistake of voting for you. You are too dishonest to lead us again. You run away from your own words with ease. George Orwell’s Animal Farm was written with you in mind.

If you think your persistent attacks on Jean Mensa and her Deputies are what will win you the 2024 elections, then you have another thing coming. You belong to the past, for our future with you in charge would be more than cataclysmic for Ghana.
