OPINION: Getting Kennedy Agyapong’s support is a strategic move by Bawumia

The move highlights the political maturity of both Agyapong and Dr Bawumia and also reshapes the landscape of the upcoming 2024 elections

In a surprising twist of events, Kennedy Agyapong, known for his formidable presence in Ghanaian politics, has announced his support for the presidential campaign of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, despite past differences between the two men.

This move not only highlights the political maturity of both Agyapong and Dr Bawumia but also reshapes the landscape for the upcoming 2024 elections.

After a heated battle for leadership within the NPP, in which Dr Bawumia emerged victorious over Agyapong, tensions ran high.

Agyapong, initially reluctant to back Bawumia because of past grievances, has now pledged his support, although he earlier set out conditions before he could support Dr Bawumia in the 2024 election, notably his choice of Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the candidate’s running mate.

It is my strong conviction now that Kennedy Agyapong’s endorsement of Dr Bawumia has nothing to do with whomever Dr Bawumia chooses to be running mate.

With Agyapong’s endorsement, Dr Bawumia’s campaign gained a significant boost, securing a substantial portion of the party’s support, estimated to be 37%, based on primary results.

Agyapong’s appeal to the grass roots and his strongholds in the Volta and Central Regions further solidify Dr Bawumia’s chances in crucial election battlegrounds.

It cannot be denied that Agyapong’s ability to connect with the ordinary Ghanaian, coupled with his linguistic fluency, adds a fresh dynamic to Dr Bawumia’s campaign.

His decision to join forces with Bawumia demonstrates a willingness to prioritise the party’s success above personal differences, signalling a new era of unity within the NPP.

Having been a part of Agyapong’s erstwhile campaign team, I can attest to his dedication to the NPP. His decision to support Dr Bawumia should be seen as a strategic move to secure victory for the party in the December elections.

With Agyapong on board, Dr Bawumia’s campaign is poised to succeed, and we must rally behind them as they lead the charge towards a brighter future for Ghana.

New era of unity

As speculation surrounds Agyapong’s change of heart, the media and the public must refrain from questioning his motives.

Instead, let us acknowledge his unwavering commitment to the NPP’s cause and recognise that his addition to the campaign is a testament to the party’s strength and cohesion.

In conclusion, Kennedy Agyapong’s decision to join forces with Dr Bawumia’s campaign is a strategic masterstroke that underscores the unity and resilience of the NPP.

With his unique appeal and regional influence, his involvement undoubtedly strengthens Dr Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in the 2024 elections.
