Oti and Volta Regions to experience power outages, says GRIDCo

GRIDCo says power to the two regions will be interrupted from Thursday due to repair works on the main transformer

Parts of the Volta and Oti Regions are expected to witness power interruption for the next four days, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has announced.

The decision is to enable GRIDCo to undertake repair works on transformers supplying power in both regions.

“The Ghana Grid Company has requested the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG) to interrupt power supply from Thursday 18 to 21 March 2021,” a notice issued by GRIDCo said.

“This request is to enable GRIDCo undertake repair works on their transformer that supplies power to both Volta and Oti Regions through the 69 KV transmission line from the Asiekpe Bulk Supply Point.”

It’s impossible to return to “dumsor”

Jonathan Amoako-Baah, chief executive of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), is assuring Ghanaians that the era of erratic power outages, locally known as ‘dumsor’, is over, despite last week’s nationwide system shutdown.

He said the power system value chain in place now makes it “impossible” for ‘dumsor’ to return to Ghana.

“Let me say this: ‘Dumsor’ is not coming back,” Amoako-Baah was emphatic.

He stressed: “Indeed, the nature of the power system value chain, makes that impossible. As a crucial part of the entire value chain, overseeing matters on the transmission aspect of the process, GRIDCo wants to assure the country and all related stakeholders that none of the key participants in the value chain is resting on their oars, in an effort to maintain stability, accessibility, consistency and reliability of power supply at all times.”
