The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Oti Region and the Dambai College of Education have jointly organised a peace walk and fun games event in Dambai, Krachi East, to promote peace and harmony among Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The event saw participation from various institutions, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), New Patriotic Party (NPP), CLOSSAG, Electricity Company of Ghana, Lands Commission, National Health Insurance Authority, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Police Service.
The health walk was aimed at fostering peace and unity among the political parties and their followers before, during and after the general election.
The Oti regional director of the NCCE, Robert Boame, addressing the participants, said, “The peace walk and fun games event is a testament to our commitment to promoting peace and unity in our beloved country, Ghana. Let us continue to work together to build a harmonious society.”
“It is important that every political party during their campaign tour and platforms preach more on peace and unity to ensure the peace of the country is maintained. We have no other country to go to… there are lots of refugees from other neighbouring countries in Ghana, so where do we go if their is violence and no peace . Let us work together to protect and maintain the countries peace and unity,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the political parties, the NDC parliamentary candidate, Nelson Kofi Djabab, emphasised the need to resist violence and promote peace for development, and the importance of unity and harmony in Ghana’s democratic growth.
They also made a commitment to peace, promising not to encourage violence among their supporters. They called on citizens to remain peaceful and united during and after the elections.
This event sets a positive tone for the upcoming elections, demonstrating the power of unity and civic engagement in Ghana.
The dignitaries in attendance, including Hon. Wisdom Gidisu, Member of Parliament for Krachi East, and Michael Yaw Djato, NPP.
Meanwhile, the NCCE earlier engaged the security agencies in the region and students from the Arabic school in Dambai.
The engagement was under the theme: “Together we can build Ghana so Get Involved: the Role of Security Agencies.”
During the engagement with the security agencies, Mr Robert Boame urged the Ghana immigration service and Ghana fire service to be professionals in the discharge of their duty before and during the election.
The Oti Regional Director of NCCE, Robert Kwasi Boame, emphasised the critical role security agencies play in protecting and defending the 1992 constitution. “The current constitution has lasted three decades, partly because security agencies have stuck to their defined roles and not attempted to rule. One way of protecting it is to continue in the same spirit,” Boame said.
He went on to urge participants to ensure free and fair elections this year, stressing the importance of their involvement in the democratic process.
According to Boame, the professionalism of security agencies enhances the confidence of the public to report abuses without resorting to violence because they know the law would be applied fairly without fear or favour.
On there part, Deputy Regional Commander for Immigration, ACI Peter Osafo, assured that the service would do its best to maintain peace during the presidential and parliamentary elections. Similarly, Regional Commander ACF Billy Anaglate of the Ghana National Fire Service expressed gratitude for NCCE’s collaboration and emphasised the need for professionalism and respect for the constitution.
The events aimed to promote awareness and understanding of the constitutional roles of security agencies in building a democratic Ghana.
During the engagement with the Arabic schoolchildren in Dambai, Robert Boame made the point that, contrary to popular belief, children do have a role to play in nation building. He went on to explain that as future leaders, children have the critical role to submit themselves to be trained and modelled to become good citizens that would promote the interest of Ghana.
Boame made the comments when he engaged students of English Arabic Basic School in Dambai as part of activities marking NCCE’s annual Constitution Week celebrations.
Boame also mentioned that as children being modelled to become good citizens, it is their responsibility to keep the environment clean. According to him, “rubbish thrown into gutters and bare floors breeds mosquitoes and germs that affect our health in the community.”
He went on to advise students to encourage their parents to limit the rate of logging, which according to him is one of the reasons accounting for climate change.
“Trees are very important in our daily lives and so the more trees we cut, the more we put our lives in danger. Respectfully tell your parents to replace cut trees so we can save ourselves and the environment,” Boame explained.
The Director also advised students not to engage in abuse of drugs. He went on to mention that there are many examples of people whose future has been destroyed because they yielded to the temptation to engage in drug abuse.
The Commission believes with consistent engagements, the children are imbibing important values necessary to make them good citizens equipped enough to build the nation.
