Overlord of Waala Traditional Council honours Alban Bagbin with Dakagli Naa title

Speaker Bagbin expressed deep gratitude, dedicating the honour to the people who have consistently supported him

The Overlord of the Waala Traditional Council, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, has honoured the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, with the title “Dakakagli Naa” in a significant ceremony that brought together traditional leaders, including representatives of the House of Chiefs, landlords (Tendambas) and citizens from across the Upper West Region.

The event, held under the theme “Honouring Excellence in Leadership, Celebrating the Right Honourable Speaker, Alban S K Bagbin,” was marked by deep appreciation for the Speaker’s contributions to Ghana and beyond.

In his speech, Naa Ibrahim Kadir, the spokesperson for the overlord, emphasised the significance of the title “Dakagli Naa” which symbolises reliability, strength, and wisdom, which are the qualities that Speaker Bagbin has consistently demonstrated in his public service.

The title is derived from Dakagli, a sacred and revered site in Wa known for being a source of life and sustenance, much like how the Speaker has been a steadfast advocate for the nation’s welfare.

“Just as Dakagele, our sacred pond, is a source of life and sustenance for the people of Wa, so too has the Right Honourable Speaker, Alban S. K. Bagbin, demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the welfare of our nation, Ghana.”

Naa Ibrahim Kadir also drew a parallel between the Speaker and the crocodiles that inhabit Dakagli, which is sacred to the head God of Wa and represent protection, continuity, resilience, and a sense of community.

The spokesperson expressed hope that Speaker Bagbin would continue to epitomise these values as he serves not only Ghana but Africa and the world.

Touching on the recent serial murders of innocent and vulnerable lives in Wa, Naa Ibrahim Kadir commended the security services under the leadership of the Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu for their tireless efforts in investigating these heinous crimes.

He also lauded the dedication of the Neighbourhood Watchdog Committee, established by the Overlord for their role in ensuring the safety of the community.

However, Naa Ibrahim Kadir emphasised that sustaining these security initiatives requires collective support, particularly financial contributions from the community. He urged everyone present to lend their support to continue working towards a safer world.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Bagbin expressed deep gratitude, dedicating the honour to the people who have consistently supported him.

“I consider this honour not to me in person, but an honour to all the indigens of this land who on a daily basis continue to pray for me, to support me, to encourage me, to motivate me, and to firmly stand by me in our collective resolve to serve and to do what is right,” he stated.

Speaker Bagbin recognised the efforts of leaders and citizens across Ghana who continue to work towards improving the lives of the people, despite the many challenges faced.

Reflecting on the significance of the ceremony, Speaker Bagbin highlighted the vital role that tradition and culture play in society. “Tradition and culture embody our collective wisdom, hard work, creativity, ingenuity, and experience through the history of generations of our people. Without identity, and heritage, you are worthless,” he warned.

He also emphasised the importance of fostering close cooperation between traditional authorities and governance institutions. “The true leaders of our country are not the politicians. Rather, our revered chiefs and traditional authorities, religious and civil society leaders, are the true leaders of our society,” he remarked.

Speaker Bagbin made a passionate call for unity, stressing that the vision for a better Ghana, a better Upper West, and a stronger traditional area can only be realised through collective effort.

He pledged to uphold the responsibilities that come with his new title and expressed confidence that, with unity and God’s guidance, the community would achieve its aspirations.
