The country analyst for the Beijing Global Media Influence, Aurelia Ayisi, has said media personnel must be paid well and better equipped to carry out their watchdog role effectively.
Ayisi, who was speaking to Asaase News on the sidelines of a forum by Freedom House Research Dissemination on the Beijing Global Media Influence Report in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, said the media, as the fourth estate of the realm, need to be critical in their reportage, adding they can do so if they are financially independent.
“The issue of remuneration within media organisations cannot be ignored and one of the issues that stands in contrast is wage or resource,” she said.
Ayisi said journalists must use the data collected from organisations such as Freedom House in order to strengthen democracy in Ghana and also not produce one-sided reports.
The forum was to let journalists in the Eastern Region know about how China has transformed its media relations over the years.
Freedom House is a non-profit organisation based in Washington, D.C., U.S. It is best known for political advocacy surrounding issues of democracy, political freedom, and human rights.
Freedom House was founded in October 1941, with Wendell Willkie and Eleanor Roosevelt serving as its first honorary chairpersons.
