Pensions Allowance Goes Up By 15%

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has increased the monthly pensions allowance by 15 percent.

A statement issued by the Trust on Monday signed by Evangeline Amegashie, Corporate Affairs Manager, said the increment takes effect from January 2015.

“The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in accordance with Section 80 of the National Pensions Act 2008 (Act 766) has increased monthly pensions by 15.0 percent for 2015.”

The statement also said the minimum monthly pension for fresh pensioners shall be GH¢230.00.

In the case of current pensioners, the statement said all monthly pensions as at December 31, 2014 would be increased by a fixed rate of 5 percent plus an additional flat mount of GH¢36.92, adding that the GH¢36.92 constituted the remaining 10.0 percent.

Thus, current pensioners as at December 2014, who were on the minimum monthly pension of GH¢200.00, would have their monthly pensions increased to GH¢246.43 at an effective increase of 23.46 percent.

In May last year, SSNIT introduced an exercise to biometrically register its contributors and issue them with cards.

She gave an assurance  that SSNIT was dedicated to ensuring it delivers the best services to fulfill its promises.

SSNIT also urged contributors to check their statements of account and report to the nearest office if they encountered any problems for the smooth payment of claims.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department, in October last year, said it needed some time to halt the payment of salaries to government employees without Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) numbers.

At least 30 percent of the names on government’s payroll do not have SSNIT numbers but they still receive their monthly salaries.

The Department has been accused of helping thousands of public servants in that situation to break the law.

Public Relations Officer of the Department, Victor Nyaledzigbo told journalists in Accra that “we are still in the process and we will get there.”
