The police have intercepted a weapon hidden in a food pack delivered for an inmate at Cantonments Police Station in Accra.

According to the police, a woman with a Nigerian accent had visited the charge office of Cantonments Police Station to offer food to a prisoner in cells on remand for robbery.

On inspecting the food, officers noticed that a locally manufactured pistol with one cartridge had been concealed in it.

The spokeswoman for the Greater Accra Regional Police, Efia Tenge, said the police are on a manhunt for the said woman.

“She came along with two packs of Papaye [a popular local takeaway restaurant] packaged fast food and during the inspection of the food, [it was found that] she had hidden a locally manufactured pistol with one cartridge,” Tenge said.

“The lady at the time of the inspection was carrying a baby so she pretended as if she was giving help to the child only for her to escape from the charge office.

“Luckily the police have been able to retrieve CCTV footage from the charge office, so [we are] on a manhunt for this lady.”

Three robbers arrested

In a separate development, the police in the Upper East Region have arrested three men alleged to have been involved in several cases of armed robbery in the Nabdam and Zebilla Districts.

The suspects – Maxwell Ziaba (alias Strongman), aged 19, Bodozina Awudu (alias Network Absorber), aged 20, and Yidaana Shamshudeen, aged 23 – were arrested at various hideouts at Pelungu and Dakota, the police said.

The items retrieved from them include a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition, a double-edged knife, two unregistered motorbikes, five gold detectors and mobile phones.

The suspects have since admitted involvement in robberies in the Tarkwa and Obuasi mining communities near Tongo and Gbane in the Talensi District of the region.
