Electoral Commission dismisses three officials over stolen forms
The EC says the forms were stolen by a polling agent attached to one of the political parties
The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed three members of its temporary staff following the theft of registration forms from its district office in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.
On Saturday 4 July, the Electoral Commission was formally notified of the theft of eight copies of Form 1A from its district office in Sagnarigu.
The forms were stolen by a polling agent of one of the political parties.
“The said agent, by name Alhassan Abdullai Mohammed, has been apprehended by the police and will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“The commission has however taken steps to dismiss the three temporary officials who were manning the registration kits at the district office in the Sagnarigu Municipality.”
“This will assure the general public that the Electoral Commission will not shield any staff, permanent or temporary, who engages in misconduct during the voter registration exercise,” a statement from the EC said.
“We urge the general public to draw the Electoral Commission’s attention to acts of misconduct that tend to violate the protocols and guidelines put in place to govern the voters’ registration exercise,” the statement said.
2.2 million have cards
Voter registration in anticipation of the December general election started on 30 June 2020 and is expected to end on 6 August.
Over 2.2 million (2,216,141) voters have been registered and issued with voter identification cards in the first six days of the mass registration exercise.
The Electoral Commission said the exercise will take place at an estimated 6,788 registration clusters, made up of five registration centres each (33,367 centres in total).
The exercise will be conducted in phases, each phase spanning six days.
