Trump tears into Ilhan Omar and Somalia

Donald Trump couldn’t resist a swipe at Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her native Somalia during a rally

President Donald Trump of the United States did not spare the Somali-American congresswoman Ilhan Omar during his latest campaign stop.

Trump first tore into his Democratic contender, Joe Biden, while speaking at the rally on Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He then extended his attacks to Ilhan, who is a critical member of Biden’s campaign team, and her native Somalia.

The US president said that with people like Ilhan involved in a potential Biden government, the US could become like Somalia.

“Ilhan Omar is going to be very much involved in a Biden government. They will put this hate-filled, America-bashing socialists front and centre in deciding the fate of your family and deciding the fate of your country. I don’t think so,” he jabbed.

“A country with nothing”

Trump also took the opportunity to slate Somalia, insisting it is a country that can boast of nothing but anarchy.

He said described the African nation as a place where there is no government, no safety and no police.

He suggested that people like Ilhan, who come from a disorganised country such as Somalia, have no right to tell Americans how to run their country.

“She would like to make the government of our country just like the country from where she came, Somalia. No government, no safety, no police, no nothing, just anarchy. And now, she is telling us how to run our country, no thank you,” Trump said.

He added that the Republicans will chalk “a big victory in Minnesota”, where Ilhan is a representative in Congress.

Hits back at Trump

Congresswoman Omar fired back at Trump and reminded him that his mismanagement had led to his impeachment.

She said Trump’s poor handling of the coronavirus outbreak had led to many infections and over 100,000 deaths in the US.

Although she is an immigrant, Ilhan said, it is Trump, rather than she, who has failed the American people.

“Look, as the impeached president with over 100,000 Americans dead, 40,000,000 people without a paycheck, and massive protests across the country, maybe sit this one out,” the outspoken congresswoman tweeted.

“The only one failing to run our country is you, not this immigrant.”

Meanwhile, Somalis on Twitter described Trump’s comments as disrespectful. Others labelled the US president a racist.
