Akufo-Addo receives Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin, hails Asantehene
President Akufo-Addo has received the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin, minted to celebrate His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene
President Akufo-Addo has received his copy of the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin from executives of the E ON 3 Group, the organisation that led the initiative to seek authorisation from the Bank of Ghana for the minting of a gold coin to celebrate the Asantehene.
The Bank of Ghana gave authorisation for E ON 3 Group to mint 24-carat commemorative gold coins to celebrate Otumfuo for his tremendous contribution to peace-building in Ghana and beyond.
The 24-carat gold coin, minted in Ghana by Gold Coast Refinery, weighs about 31.104 grams and has a diameter of 37 millimetres.
Support for initiative
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, presented the gold coin to President Akufo-Addo on behalf of the delegation.
In brief remarks before the presentation, Jinapor said his ministry fully supports everything associated with the gold coin.
He added that the gold coin initiative ties in with government’s agenda to add value to Ghana’s raw materials.
Otumfuo’s record
In a statement, Jesse Agyepong, the lead consultant and general manager for E ON 3 Group, said Otumfuo Osei Tutu received the Pillar of Peace honour at the Africa Premier Leadership Awards on 29 December 2019 in recognition for his role in conflict resolution relating to the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute.
The peace initiative, Agyepong said, travelled through the tenure of three Ghanaian presidents, starting with President John Kufuor, through the time of Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama, and finally securing the resolution under the first government of President Akufo-Addo.
“Otumfuo’s pursuit and love for peace go beyond the Dagbon issue, including settlement of stool and chieftaincy disputes in Asanteman, and facilitation and mediation of difficult political transitions,” Agyepong said.
He said that these and other endeavours by Otumfuo are the reasons why he believes the Bank of Ghana gave E ON 3 unreserved authorisation to mint the gold coin to celebrate Otumfuo’s silver jubilee.
Outstanding contribution
After receiving the Commemorative Gold Coin, President Akufo-Addo said light-heartedly: “It is a notorious fact that the contribution of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, to the peace and security of Ghana is outstanding and it is appropriate that he should be so honoured.
“I am grateful for the courtesy of your visit and the gift that you have given me. I appreciate it very much.
“I am hoping that developments like this become normal and customary in the development of our nation,” President Akufo-Addo added.
The coin
One side of the gold coin bears the portrait of the Asantehene in the centre, surrounded by Adinkra symbols.
The images symbolise broking peace, harmony and reconciliation.
The other side bears the image of the Golden Stool, Sikadwa Kofi, which is the highest symbol of peace in the Asante kingdom.
The delegation
The members of the delegation that presented the gold coin to President Akufo-Addo included Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori-Atta, executive chairman of the E ON 3 Group, and Jesse Agyepong, general manager.
The other members were Olumide Olatunji, the managing director of Access Bank Ghana plc, Nana Akwasi Awuah, the managing director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, Abraham Dwuma Odoom, country manager for Gold Coast Refinery, and Paul Asimenu, legal advisor at Gold Coast Refinery.
Access Bank is the official banking partner for the gold coin, Gold Coast Refinery is the official minting company, PMMC is keeping custody of the coin, and Coronation Insurance is the official insurance company.
