Professor Kenneth Attafuahʻs son sweeps awards at the 2024 congregation of Ashesi University
He graduated at the top of his class with the highest academic distinction from Ashesi – a summa cum laude in computer engineering
Ashesi University, a leading private university in Ghana committed to educating a new generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders in Africa, has conferred its highest undergraduate honour – the Presidential Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship – on Yamoah Frimpong Attafuah (Wofa), the second son of the executive secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Professor Kenneth Attafuah.
He graduated at the top of his class with the highest academic distinction – a summa cum laude in computer engineering. He also received the Technical Excellence Award from Ashesi University.
The president’s award for scholarship, leadership and citizenship was conferred on Yamoah Frimpong Attafuah in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the mission of Ashesi, and his exemplification of Ashesi’s values of scholarship, leadership and citizenship”.
He also graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering
Ashesi conferred the honours on him at its twentieth commencement ceremony, held in the Archer Cornfield Courtyard of the university on Saturday (24 August 2024).
The citation
“Yamoah Frimpong Attafuah is an exemplary Ashesi student. He is the action-oriented scholar, gracious servant leader and optimistic citizen that we dream of when we cheer our students,” his citation read in part.
“Thankfully, this stellar performer does not just exist in our imagination, he walks among his peers full of life, always cheerful, constantly learning and dutifully applying what he knows. He generously shares his talent, energy and knowledge.
“Yamoah volunteered on the academic committee of the Ashesi Student Council in his second year. While many were still adjusting to a changed academic calendar and the unpredictability it occasioned, he decided to step up and help create the community we desired.
“That committee monitored course loads and implemented programmes to help students better cope with our rigorous programme during a period of uncertainties,” the citation said.
“Beyond Ashesi, he was an able ambassador of the institution on the Applied Methods and Research Experience (AMRE) programme at the College of Wooster in Ohio, the United States. He developed with three others ‘a best practices guide to improve Schneider Electric’s use of Large Language Models’ after conducting several experiments.
“Before that, he was on a team of Ashesi students who developed a device that enables the blind and visually impaired to plot and interpret bar graphs and perform simple mathematical computations. His peers had a sense of what he would contribute to Ashesi when they voted for him for the ‘Star Image Award’ during the Ubors Awards in 2021.
“He is never flustered, never out of ideas and never missing in action, always composed, always learning, always serving. For personifying the Ashesi ideals of scholarship, leadership and citizenship, we present this award to the young man with an unusually avuncular disposition, an ‘uncle’ to all in this Ashesi family: (Wofa) Yamoah Frimpong Attafuah,” the citation said.
Father’s eulogy
In a post on his Facebook wall to celebrate his son‘s achievement, Professor Kenneth Attafuah wrote: “Saturday, 24 August 2024. The happiest day in the life of my family.
“The highly esteemed Ashesi University gave its highest recognition to my second son, Yamoah Frimpong Attafuah, popularly known as Wofa, for being an ‘action-oriented scholar, gracious servant leader and optimistic citizen’.
“For these exceptional personal attributes and his stellar performance, and in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Ashesi University’s core values, Wofa was the proud recipient of the President’s Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship. The citation said in part that Wofa personified these values of Ashesi University.
“We were also very excited that Wofa graduated summa cum laude, the highest academic distinction, in computer engineering, topping his class. In addition, Wofa received the Technical Excellence Award from Ashesi University at a brief ceremony at the Labadi Beach Hotel the previous night.
“For me, the crawling baby who sat on my lap day after day, endlessly hitting the computer key trying repeatedly to jump over a hurdle in the Spiderman game, had come into his own, realising every childhood dream he had expressed growing up. The lesson is clear: grit, perseverance, discipline, selflessness and reliance on God are key to attaining exceptional success.
“For us as a family, our joy is boundless. Until yesterday, I didn’t know my wife Joyce could match the shouting abilities of overly excited family members whose screams of joy rip off the roof of the auditorium during the graduation ceremony when their expectant family graduand is called for the certificate.
“To God and all our families and friends everywhere, and the faculty, executives and students of Ashesi University, we say a huge ‘Thank you’ for your love, kindness and support during Wofa’s four-year journey on the hills of Ashesi. ‘I will lift up my eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.’ Psalm 121, 1 – 2.”
