Provisional results put Akufo-Addo ahead of Mahama

Akufo-Addo is in a pole position to be declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election by 51.40% of the total votes cast, per provisional results

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is in a commanding lead to be declared the winner of the 2020 presidential elections following provisional results from the 16 regions.

Akufo-Addo is in a pole position to beat his main contender John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by 51.40% of the total votes cast, per provisional results available.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate polled 6,687, 825 votes representing 51.40% as against Mahama’s 6,150,388 representing 47.27%, according to provisional results available to Asaase Radio.

The Electoral Commission is expected to declare a winner Wednesday. The election management body has so far released seven regional certified results.

Challenges with declaration

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday from the Accra International Conference Centre, EC chair, Jean Mensa, apologized for the commission’s inability to declare the results within 24 hours as announced prior to the conduct of the polls.

“We express our regret for our inability to declare the results at 5pm on Tuesday as planned. The unexpected rains and some of the challenges we experienced at the Collation Centre made it difficult to declare the results as expected. We are hoping that, in the early hours of today, we will receive two additional results and will thereafter be able to make the declaration today,” she told the media.

She added: “As we speak, the Commission has received 14 out of the 16 regional results. We have the national Collation Centre where we have had representatives of the various political parties since yesterday.

“As the results come in, the party representatives review them against what they themselves have received from the regions and once they are satisfied that the results that have come to us from the regions are a true reflection of what they have received, they then append their signatures to it before the results are brought to my attention.

“As Returning Officer of the 2020 presidential election, I then certify these results. Out of the 14 results received, we have certified seven up to date.”
