The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and UNICEF Ghana have engaged the media to support the Hand Hygiene for All Initiative (HH4A).
The two institutions have called on the media and other stakeholders to play a collaborative role in advancing the cause by developing and disseminating messages that will lead to the public cultivating the habit of washing their hands regularly.
The communication specialist of UNICEF Ghana, Offeibea Baddoo, engaged the media in an exercise to educate them on the progress of the organisation over the past years.
The WHO, MSWR and UNICEF Ghana in 2011-2012 were able to get 12% of the population to practice effective hand washing and hand hygiene and by 2018, increased to 48.5%.
The ministry and UNICEF Ghana are seeking to provide about 11,000 hand washing facilities to the electoral areas to achieve the SDG goal six of achieving access to adequate and equitable sanitation for all by 2030.
The national consultant of the HH4A, Charles Nachinab, has urged the general public on the need to continue with hand washing hygiene and hand hygiene in general amidst the measures to alleviate COVID-19, as it will go a long way in the protection, prevention and spread of other disease-related infections and viruses.
“While the media has a part to play in advancing the initiative’s goals, it is crucial to ensure the accessibility and sustainability of hand washing facilities across all sectors,” Nachinab said.
He called on the general public to make hand washing a habit.
