At least four suspects have been picked up by the police at Lolonya, near Sege in the Greater Accra Region, and detained on charges of unlawful possession of over 104 bags of substances suspected to be narcotics.
The four suspects – Prince Ntow, Felix Owusu, Jery Quartey and Mashack Daitey – were arrested while loading sacks of the compressed plant material into a boat on the beach in Sege.
During the arrest, Mashack Daitey, who is the assemblyman for the Sege area, attempted to bribe the arresting officers with a sum of money amounting to GHC20,000, a statement from the Ghana Police Service said.
The truck loaded with the contraband has been impounded and is at the Tema Regional Police headquarters together with the money used in the attempt to bribe.
The four suspects were put before the Ashaiman Circuit Court on Friday (6 January), where they were remanded into police custody to reappear on 23 January 2023.
