The nine-member committee tasked with investigating the explosion that occurred at the Omni Quarries in Shama in the Western Region has recommended that the company should not be granted a lease to operate.

The Minerals Commission has said the quarry was operating illegally.

At least four people were confirmed dead with many others injured in the explosion which occurred on Sunday, 10 September.

The committee has attributed the explosion to heat at the explosive’s storage site of the Chinese-owned firm. It also found that the company was operating without the services of a safety officer.

Speaking to journalists to present its report, chairman of the committee, Frederick Agyeman, said the company has also been charged to bear the cost of the bills and compensations due victims of the explosion.

“The cause of the explosion could be heat generated around the explosives …”

“… During an interaction with workers of the company and eyewitnesses that we interviewed, it came up that the company had no safety officer,” Agyeman said.
