The State Housing Company Limited says the move is part of measures aimed at complementing government's effort in reducing the two million housing deficit

Story Highlights
  • "So, since the last time we spoke, a lot has changed, and I will say it has changed for the better. Remember I spoke about the national mortgage finance scheme that the ministry of finance was working on. It's actually in place now, so we are able to partner with certain banks to be able to do mortgages for people who are buying from us."

The State Housing Company Limited has rolled out a mortgage scheme to facilitate ownership of houses across the country, MD of the company Kwabena Ampofo Appiah said.

The move is part of measures aimed at complementing government’s effort in reducing the housing deficit which currently stands at two million units.

Speaking in an interview with Kojo Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show, Appiah said the company has commenced work on many of its abandoned projects since 2018.

“So, since the last time we spoke, a lot has changed, and I will say it has changed for the better. Remember I spoke about the national mortgage finance scheme that the ministry of finance was working on. It’s actually in place now, so we are able to partner with certain banks to be able to do mortgages for people who are buying from us,” the MD said.

“And also, to fund some of our projects, from the last time we spoke we have been able to kick start constructions again at some of the affordable housing sites that were abandoned in 2008, and we have also been able to start a few more projects in the Western North, Upper West Region, things are moving in the right direction now.”

Retrieval of funds

Appiah revealed the company has revised its strategies to retrieve debts owed by its occupants by dragging them to court.

The SHC MD said the development has led to retrievals of funds which is now being reinvested into building affordable housing in parts of the country.

“We had big corporations, big companies owing us millions in rents, they didn’t just pay, so we had to go after all those to be able to get those monies, and there are still more monies that have not been collected and this year we are going after people who have not paid.”

The SHC boss further revealed the company will soon begin construction of affordable housing units at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region and Ahafo Region.
