Ghana sports has experienced a rollercoaster week, marked by both triumphs and tragedies.
While the Black Stars maintained their FIFA ranking and Asante Kotoko celebrated a domestic victory, the nation was rocked by the disappearance of a ‘Paralympic team’ and the relegation of the Davis Cup side.
Paralympic team vanishes
A shadow has been cast over Ghanaian sport following the disappearance of a ‘Paralympic team’ in Norway.
11 individuals, including athletes and officials, vanished after arriving in Oslo to compete in the Fjordkraft Bergren Marathon.
The Ghana National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has suspended two officials over alleged visa fraud.
Black Stars hold firm
On a more positive note, the Black Stars have retained their 64th position in the FIFA world rankings.
Although there was no movement for Ghana, the African football landscape experienced shifts, with Morocco slipping two places to 14th overall.
Southgate resigns as England’s manager
In European football, England’s hopes of ending their major tournament drought were dashed once again as they suffered a narrow defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Manager Gareth Southgate subsequently announced his resignation, bringing an end to an eight-year tenure.
Golden Rackets relegated in Davis Cup blow
Ghana’s Davis Cup campaign ended in disappointment as the Golden Rackets were relegated to Africa Group IV.
Despite a promising start on the final day of the competition, which saw the Rackets complete a clean sweep against Côte d’Ivoire, defeat to hosts Nigeria proved decisive.
Asante Kotoko reigns supreme in Democracy Cup
Domestically, Asante Kotoko claimed the inaugural Democracy Cup, defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in a thrilling encounter.
The victory extended their dominance over their opponents and provided a fitting climax to a competition that celebrated 30 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
