Student visa applications to double this year, says US ambassador

The ambassador made this announcement at the 248th Independence Day celebration at the US Embassy in Accra

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer, says her outfit will be doubling the expected number of student visa applications this year.

The ambassador made this announcement at the 248th Independence Day Celebration at the US Embassy in Accra.

According to her, the US Embassy is “on track to set another record in adjudicating student visa applications this year”.

“American universities will benefit from the seriously impressive students that Ghana produces, who will, in turn, use their American education to become the scientists, journalists, and leaders of tomorrow’s Ghana and strengthen the bridges between our two great countries, she added.

The event, which hosted several dignitaries, including some traditional leaders of the country and other ambassadors, was marked with good music and a display of some American cuisine.

Touching on the United States elections, which come off on Tuesday, 5 November 2024, a month before Ghana’s elections, the U.S. ambassador said, “This year will test the democracies of both our republics, but if we uphold the democratic institutions that have remained a bulwark of our countries; draw upon our diversity as our strength, not a liability; and insist on the rights of our fellow citizens to voice their opinions and dissent, even as we disagree with them, our republics will be in good hands. I believe we can “keep” them.”

Virginia Virginia Evelyn Palmer believes that though elections are “exhausting because they’re worth fighting for,” everyone’s voice counts in deciding the direction of both countries; urging peaceful polls.
