Akua Denteh murder: 12-year jail term “quite exciting”, says Songtaba

The Tamale High Court has convicted Hajia Mohammed Serena and Latifa Bomaye to 12 years imprisonment over the murder of 90-year-old Akua Denteh at Kafaba in the Savannah Region

Women’s right advocacy organisation, Songtaba, has hailed the sentencing of two persons in connection with the murder of Akua Denteh, who was accused of witchcraft three years ago.

Songtaba said the development is a step in the right direction.

The Tamale High Court has convicted Hajia Mohammed Serena and Latifa Bomaye to 12 years imprisonment over the murder of the 90-year-old woman at Kafaba in the Savannah Region.

On Thursday, 23 July 2020, Denteh was lynched over witchcraft accusations. Seven people including the chief of the Kafaba community, Seidu Yahaya, were arrested by police in Salaga.

Serena and Bomaye were later arrested at their hideouts. They were charged for murder.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (5 June), the executive director of Songtaba, Lamnatu Adam called for the arrest of the other perpetrators of the crime.

“It was a long wait,” Adam said. “Three years, but eventually it happened. So, for me I think it is a step towards the fight that we have, so the fact that two people have been convicted, for us it’s quite exciting.”

“Witchcraft accusation is quite rampant in the Northern Region, and so if we have the court taking action against those who are perpetuating it, then it is a step in the right direction,” Adam said.
