Sylvester Tetteh joins “Team Bawumia” ahead of 4 November NPP primaries

The MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro in Greater Accra and well-known member of the Alan for President campaign, Sylvester Tetteh, has joined the campaign of the vice-president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the run-up to the New Patriotic Party presidential primaries on 4 November.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana today (12 September 2023), Sylvester Tetteh said it is obvious that the NPP rank and file support the candidacy of Vice-President Bawumia and, in that light, he has decided, in consultation with his constituents, to join Team Bawumia.
Tetteh explained that as Alan is no longer in the race, he needs to make a choice among the remaining candidates. His choice, he said, is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, because he believes Bawumia will make an excellent president.
“It is obvious from the campaigns that we have waged – and I have engaged extensively with my constituents, people within and without, and I think I am making a firm commitment – that I will support Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the 4 November elections,” the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro MP said.
Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, a long-standing presidential hopeful of the ruling NPP, announced his decision to pull out of the 4 November primaries in a press release dated Tuesday 5 September 2023.
The withdrawal did not surprise many because of his poor showing in the first round of voting in the primaries on 26 August, when the NPP trimmed down the number of presidential aspirants from the ten who filed to contest the primaries to five.
Until Tetteh’s announcement, Kyerematen and his campaign team (Alan 4 President, A4P) had been relatively quiet since the 26 August special electoral college. Voting in that first round took place in all 16 regional capitals, with an additional centre at the NPP headquarters.
On Sunday 3 September, before Kyerematen’s press release, the “A4P” team announced that the candidate would address the press on 5 September.
The announcement generated instant debate among the NPP rank and file as to what Kyerematen was likely to say.
Since his formal withdrawal from the primaries, many of his supporters have openly expressed their support for whomever the NPP chooses as the party’s presidential candidate for the December 2024 polls.
One other prominent member of A4P, the former tourism minister and MP for Evalue Gwira Catherine Afeku, has also thrown her support behind Dr Bawumia.
The reality is that Alan’s poor showing has neutralised his “Aduru Wo So” (It’s my turn) mantra. His loss to the sitting vice-president by such a wide margin (Dr Bawumia won over 68% of the special electoral college vote to Alan’s 10.29%) raised grave concern among members of his team about his ability to raise funds to pursue his campaign even if he still has the appetite to run.
