Tema MESEC probes clash between youth and navy personnel

The police and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have also commenced investigations into the clash between the youth of Tema Newtown and personnel of the Ghana Navy

The Tema Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC) will today (Monday 15 April) commence investigations into circumstances leading to a clash between some youth and navy personnel in Tema Newtown in the Greater Accra Region.

The incident happened on Friday (12 April 2024) evening.

The youth, as part of this year’s Kplejoo festival, had embarked on a street procession and on arriving at the street in front of the Eastern Naval Command, a misunderstanding ensued between them and some naval personnel on duty.

In the process, a vehicle belonging to the Ghana Navy was allegedly destroyed by some youth in the crowd.

In the ensuing fracas between the youth and the naval ratings, two persons were reportedly killed.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday(15 April), the Greater Accra Minister-designate, Titus Glover called on the media to be circumspect in its reportage on the issue adding that calm has returned to the area.

“For now, there is total calm in Tema Newtown. People are going around performing their duties without fear or favour. The Tema Metropolitan Security Council will be sitting this morning to look into the circumstances that led to the incident.”

“They will look at the veracity of the incident and the possibility of it being referred to us in Accra,” Glover said.
