TEWU joins FUSSAG and UG Senior Staff in nationwide strike
The union joins the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana in the industrial action
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-GH) has announced a nationwide strike effective Friday (20 September), the Union said in a statement.
TEWU-GH cites the government’s failure to meet their demands for improved working conditions. The union joins the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana in the industrial action.
It expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, particularly regarding allowances and pension contributions.
“The non-implementation on the part of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to implement the negotiated and approved Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus allowances to our rank and file, even though an approval letter for implementation of such was issued by the Ministry of Finance on August 2, 2024.”
TEWU further noted the unfulfilled government promise to “recalculate and pay members Tier Two interest that has accrued from the delayed payment of the Tier Two deductions to our Scheme from January 2010 to 2016.”
“Currently, the government is owing our Tier Two deductions from January 2024 to date (8 months) even though such deductions were made from our hard-earned salaries”, it said.
The strike is expected to impact educational institutions across the country until their demands are addressed.
