Thomas Asare: Ghanaian appointed assistant secretary general of World Metrological Organisation

The World Metrological Organisation (WMO) has appointed Thomas Asare as an assistant secretary general.

The WMO assistant secretary-general is responsible for ensuring the operation of the organisation’s overall corporate strategic direction and administration.

This includes overseeing the management of regular budget and extrabudgetary resources, finance, risk management, corporate IT, human resources, conferences, linguistic services, travel, procurement, and facilities management.

Asare’s appointment takes effect from Wednesday 1 May.

Until his appointment, Asare was comptroller and director of the division of financial and administrative management where he has served for over nine years.

He brought a lot of enduring, innovative, and productive changes to UNICEF, with his integrity, top-class professionalism, wisdom and compassion.

About Thomas Asare 

Asare is a finance and development executive with over 25 years of experience leading and transforming financial and operations management globally.

He has worked with multi-constituency governance structures and engaged with governments and international organisations on key development strategies that aim at alleviating poverty and improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable population.

Before joining UNICEF, he was the director of programming, budgeting, finance and accounting of the African Union Commission and financial controller of the African Union.

Earlier, he held positions in financial management, programme planning, and management advisory and assurance services working with several international development organizations in Africa and Asia, including the African Capacity Building Foundation, USAID, and the CGIAR Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers.

He previously also served as an assistant auditor-general in the office of the auditor-general of Ghana and was a member of the audit and risk committee of the executive board of African Capacity Building Foundation.

Asare holds a Master of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Northampton and a Master of Science Degree in Audit and Consultancy from Birmingham City University, both in the United Kingdom.

In addition, he is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, U.K,  and has several other relevant certifications and memberships.
