UG: “Percher” falls from fourth floor of Mensah Sarbah Hall

Wahab Abdulai suffered a bone fracture after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of the University of Ghana hall to escape from officials

Wahab Abdulai, an illegal resident at the University of Ghana, has reportedly jumped from the fourth floor of the Mensah Sarbah Hall Annex A block over fears that he would be evicted by hall officials.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred in the small hours of Friday 23 April 2021.

Abdulai suffered a bone fracture and was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Abdulai, one of a host of illegal residents on campus, popularly referred to as “perchers”, is said to be a former student who is now doing national service.

“The victim was asked to hide on the balcony until the assumed porters leave. Suddenly, they heard a loud, crashing sound and rushed to see what had happened, then they found the boy lying on the ground floor,” an eyewitness said.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Students at the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has called for calm as officials investigate the incident.

“I would urge every student to be calm. There should be no panic. The situation is under control. The issue is being investigated by the police, the hall authorities; they are all involved trying to get to the bottom of it.

“While we are at it, I urge every student to keep to their core activities, as it is a packed semester, and they should not feed into the rumours going on. But very soon, our official communication will be issued by the university,” Professor Bokpin said.
