The University of Ghana SRC food bank is an initiative by the Boakye Lincoln-led student executive team, under the office of the general secretary, to eradicate food poverty among needy students.
The food bank project is a beneficiary of the SRC endowment fund, which includes an insurance policy that caters for students who become orphans while in school, as well as an additional scholarship scheme (Ketewa biara nswa) to supplement the SRC Yibiboa.
This maiden food bank project operates solely on sponsorship, but in years to come it will be run using both sponsorship and funds from the SRC endowment fund.
Who benefits from food banks?
To benefit, a student must apply through his or her respective hall or department, witnessed by his/her hall tutors or lecturers from the respective department, as well as the hall executives or department executives.
After this application, a quick investigation is done to confirm that the applicant is really needy, which precedes the SRC executive’s endorsement and that of the dean of students. All this is done within seven working days.
Edward Asante, a student who benefited from the first phase of the food bank initiative, said: “I am very grateful to the UGSRC because when I look through the package, I can see breakfast food items (Milo, cereal etc) and lunch and dinner food items (rice, oil, tomato paste, Indomie etc).
“I feel like the rest of the semester is completely catered for with this donation,” Asante said.
“All I want to say is that may God bless the SRC and its donor groups. And we plead with other companies and individuals endowed to help donate to the food bank so I can get more, as well as other less endowed students.”
A group of Level 400 students told reporters how excited and proud they were of the UGSRC for taking up such an initiative and finding partners for it.
However, they also appealed to individuals and multinational industries to donate to this good cause, as it will help students to build up sound academic experience.
In collective terms, the students are proud of the SRC and call on all and sundry to donate to the food bank.
Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom, the SRC general secretary, expressed appreciation to all the sponsors of the food bank. They include Honourable Lydia Seyram Alhassan (the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon), Stevens Driving School, Indomie Ghana, Kellogg’s Ghana, SRC executives, the dean of students at the University of Ghana, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, ASA and Ghana Gas.
