Upper East Region: Unknown assailants attack and kill police officer

Unknown assailants on Sunday (24 January 2022) attacked a police officer in Bawku in the Upper East Region leading to her death.

According to the police, Constable Regina Angenu was escorting a colleague to his barracks when the assailants attacked and shot her in the groin.

Angenu died at the Presbyterian Mission Hospital while undergoing treatment.

The body has since been sent to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has banned the use of motorbikes in the Bawku municipality in the Upper East Region.

The new restriction comes weeks after the RESEG imposed restrictions on the use of motorbikes to lift male residents within the municipality.

According to the RESEG, the deteriorating insecurity situation in the area necessitated the ban.

In a statement, the REGSEC said tricycles, which are a popular means of transport in most parts of the Upper East Region, have, however, been exempted.

The RESEG has directed the Bawku Municipal Security Council to enforce the ban immediately.
