Upper West: Joint security taskforce patrols Black Volta to curb galamsey

This initiative aims to safeguard the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary and its environment from further degradation

A joint security taskforce has begun regular patrols along the banks of the Black Volta River in Wechiau in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region in response to rising concerns over illegal mining activities within the protected zone of the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary.

This initiative aims to safeguard the sanctuary and its environment from further degradation.

The taskforce, composed of personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces, commenced its operations following an exclusive report by Asaase Radio that highlighted the escalating issue of illegal mining in the area.

The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary, renowned for its population of hippopotamuses and diverse wildlife, has been increasingly threatened by the activities of illegal miners.

These activities not only pose a danger to the ecological balance of the sanctuary but also jeopardise the livelihoods of communities dependent on eco-tourism.

A report by Asaase Radio brought to light the severe impact of these mining operations, prompting swift action from authorities.

The patrols by the task force are designed to deter illegal miners and protect the natural resources of the sanctuary.
