US troops to leave Niger by 15 September 2024

The respective defence departments met from the 15 to19 May to settle on a disengagement agreement to effectively withdraw US troops from Niger

Representatives of the US Department of Defense and the Department of National Defense of the Republic of Niger have agreed on a disengagement agreement to effect the withdrawal of US troops from Niger which is to occur no later than 15 September 2024.

The respective defence departments met from the 15th to the 19th of May to settle on a disengagement agreement to effectively withdraw U.S. troops from Niger.

Since Niger staged a successful coup on the 26th of July 2023 and then proceeded to exit the regional bloc, ECOWAS, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, earlier this year in January, the country has eventually disassociated from foreign relationships such as expelling its military ties with France.

Niger has also considered creating a new currency to dispel the continuation of the use of the CFA Franc.

Nevertheless, according to the press release, “The withdrawal of U.S. forces from Niger does not affect the continuation of U.S.-Niger development relations. The United States and Niger are committed to ongoing diplomatic dialogue to define the future of their bilateral relations.”
