Victor Owusu confident NPP Offinso North peace deal will hold

The NPP Council of Elders in the Ashanti Region is confident the peace agreement will secure the marginal seat for the NPP in the lead-up to Election 2024

Victor Owusu, the secretary to the Council of Elders of the Ashanti regional New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed confidence that the peace agreement recently brokered in Offinso North will have a lasting effect.

The Council of Elders announced on Thursday (22 August) that it had successfully mediated a resolution between NPP factions in the constituency.

The agreement followed a meeting on Wednesday (21 August) involving key figures such as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Offinso North, Fred Kyei Asamoah, and the constituency chairman, Johnson Modma.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Friday (23 August), Owusu said that the council’s approach – allowing all parties to voice their grievances – had been crucial in achieving reconciliation.

“I believe that this resolution will be permanent because we gave the opportunity to the feuding parties to pour out their grievances,” Owusu said.

“At the end of the day, the people were reconciled because we created a platform for them to air their grievances.”

United we stand

Owusu also highlighted the importance of unity in the constituency, stressing that any disunity could jeopardise the NPP’s chances locally in the general election due on 7 December.

“Offinso North is a marginal seat for us. There’s a very strong NDC presence over there; we have struggled in the last election to maintain the seat. So, any semblance of disunity within us will not be good for us,” Owusu warned.

He added, “That’s why we went [in] with all strength to make sure that we stay united, get their grievances resolved and then tell the people, tell the stakeholders, tell the co-ordinators [and] tell the executives that unity is paramount in the pursuit of our presidential and parliamentary admissions come 7 December 2024.”
