Wa military rampage: Justice will be served, says regional minister

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih is optimistic a four-member committee set up to probe military brutalities in Wa will do a thorough job

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, has assured residents of Wa that justice will be served after a group of soldiers assaulted them recently.

Dr Salih gave the assurance after a four-member committee tasked to investigate last Thursday’s assault paid a courtesy call on him in Wa.

“Members of the committee tasked by the military high command to investigate the unfortunate incident that took place in Wa on Thursday 1 July 2021 called on me in my office this morning. A group of young soldiers molested some people in Wa hence, the need to investigate the matter.

“Three persons visited the Wa Municipal Hospital for medical attention while 13 others have filed complaints with the police in Wa. The four-member committee is headed by Colonel B. Z. Ayorrogo of the Ghana Armed Forces. Justice shall be served,” Dr Salih posted on Facebook after the visit.

On Thursday 1 July, some soldiers were captured on video brutalising some residents of Wa in the Upper West Region. The attack was allegedly triggered by the theft of a mobile phone belonging to one of the military officers.

Reports suggest the victims who are mostly commercial tricycle operators, motorists and pedestrians were whipped and made to roll on the bare floor with some forced into gutters nearby.

Several of them are said to have sustained injuries. Two of them are currently on admission at the Wa Municipal Hospital.
