The Ghana Football Association communications director says the GFA is confident Laryea Kingston can lead Ghana back to the U-17 African Cup of Nations next year

Henry Asante Twum says Laryea Kingston is not under pressure to succeed as the national U17 team coach.

The Ghana Football Association communications director says the GFA is confident Laryea Kingston can lead Ghana back to the U-17 African Cup of Nations next year.

The Black Starlets’ last AFCON appearance was in 2017 when they finished as runners-up up losing to Mali in the final.

Laryea Kingston’s side kicked off their campaign in the 2024 WAFU Zone B U17 qualifiers with a 5-1 victory at the University of Ghana Stadium on Wednesday to set the tone for the first AFCON qualification in seven years.

They face Benin in the second group game next Tuesday (21 May) and a win means Kingston’s boys will secure qualification to the semifinals.

“The Black Starlets are on course, On Tuesday we pray they win and win the semi-final, then we are back on the African continent,” Asante Twum said on Asaase 99,5’s Team Talk Show.

Laryea Kingston, the former Black Stars winger served as an assistant coach of the team under Abdul Karim Zito for one and half year until he was named as the head coach of the Black Starlets in April 2024.

When asked about the targets set for Kingston, Asante Twum replied; “to form a good team, and then qualify the team to major competitions. That is the bottom line-but there’s no pressure on Laryea Kingston to succeed.

“We believe in his capabilities and his competencies. He has shown over the years that he is a top-quality manager.”
