WASSCE results: I’ve put critics of Free SHS to shame, says Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo says critics of the Free SHS programme now have egg on their face after an “impressive” set of WASSCE results

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says critics of his flagship Free Senior High School programme should eat a humble pie following the splendid performance by candidates in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of candidates who sat the WASSCE in 2020 in Ghana which show a vast improvement over the performance by the 2019 batch.

“The provisional results indicate that there were improvements in the performance of candidates at Grades A1 to C6 in English language and mathematics (core) in 2020 as compared to 2019,” WAEC said in a statement.

In a breakdown, WAEC said the pass rate for English language was 48.96% in 2019, against 57% in 2020. For core mathematics the pass rate was 65.31% in 2019, against 65.71% in 2020. Overall, this year’s cohort produced the best results in Ghana since 2015, the analysis shows.

Speaking at a rally in the park at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School during a campaign whistle-stop visit to Akuapem South, one of the activities in a two-day tour of the Eastern Region, the president said: “I am reliably informed that the WASSCE results of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School were extremely impressive. Those who claimed that the policy was not achievable must be very ashamed now.

“I will shelve that conversation for now, so we deal with it another day. However, I wish to congratulate all the students for their brilliant performance in the WASSCE examinations,” Akufo-Addo said.

The Omanhene of the Aburi Traditional Area, Nana Otoobour Djan Kwesi, who is also the Akuapem Adontenhene, traced his guest’s roots to Aburi: President Akufo-Addo’s paternal grandfather, whose name was Addo Dankwa, hailed from Aburi.

He urged the townspeople to vote for their own (ie, President Akufo-Addo) in the 7 December presidential and parliamentary elections.

“Former president Atta Mills once said that ‘when a thing is in its home, it certainly is a good thing’ [adze wo fie a, oye]. If Nana Addo is here and this is his home, then I urge you to do the right thing. Indeed, I speak to you in parables,” Otoobour Djan Kwesi said.
