We need to get back to the drawing board, says Jojo Ephson

The seven-member Ghana boxing team fell short at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand, the final chance to secure a spot at the Olympics

Ghana’s boxing fans are reeling after the national boxing team’s historic setback of failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics for the first time in two decades.

The seven-member Ghana boxing team fell short at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand, the country´s final chance to secure a spot at the Olympics after missing out at both the African qualifiers and the first World Qualifier earlier this year.

Charles Sergius Jojo Ephson, Communications Director for the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), admitted to asaaseradio.com that this failure is a major blow.

“It’s a serious dent on the credentials of the boxing fraternity,” he said. “Boxing remains Ghana’s leading medal prospect at major international competitions, especially at the Olympics, having won four out of the five medals that Ghana has won at the Olympics.”

Ephson acknowledged a need for introspection. “We have the talent in Ghana,” he said, “but talent alone is not enough to compete and be on top.” He pointed to other countries’ success, suggesting Ghana may be falling behind in “quality preparation, organisation, and strategies.”

The communications director further stressed the need to go back to the drawing board to map out a new path forward. “We need to get back seriously into the drawing board and map out the right strategies going forward,” he said. “Which include reorganisation of the national team, organising a nationwide championship to select a new crop of boxers, and preparing them well through various international competitions.”

Ephson emphasised the importance of this period as they build towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics: “Be it at the Commonwealth Games, African Championship, and perhaps the African Games, before they prepare for the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.”
