Chad is a landlocked country in the Sahelian region of Africa to the east of Niger. It is one of the poorest countries in the world and suffers from the adverse effects of climate change.
The Chadian economy is also heavily reliant on its oil reserves and has faced a continuous recession since oil prices dropped in 2014 leading to intense poverty.’
In order to resolve some of these issues women from local provinces in Chad, Prisca and Fatime discuss their proactivity on the local level.
Prisca who lives in the province of Mao, Western Chad, is an emerging electrician. Despite her passion for the electrician profession, she wants to dispel the ongoing stereotypes about women in her career sector, she states, “The way other people look at my profession as a woman is hard to bear. Because I’m wearing electrician overalls, people laugh at me.”
She continues, “But the work I do is useful and good. I would like other women to come and work with me and for us to join forces so that there are more of us. But when they see me walking down the street in this outfit, they think I’m doing a man’s job. My dream is to train other women and set up a company of women electricians. I would like to teach them the beauty and value of this profession”
Fatime, on the other hand, has created a grassroots movement as she is the President of the Barh el Gazel Women’s Platform.
The Barh el Gael Women’s Platform brings together women groups to take on challenges they face individually in a collective manner. Many of these women are widows or live on their own, and have no means of support.
The Sahel Alliance is working with the Provincial Action Committees to implement the Integrated Territorial Approach. The Integrated Territorial support will hopefully assist the concerns of Prisca, Fatime and other women in Chad.
