Ya Naa donates GHC10,000 to national cathedral project

The board of trustees of the national cathedral secretariat has rolled out the “ketewa biara nsua” initiative to raise half of the US$200 million needed to build the edifice

Ya Naa Abukari II, the overlord of Dagbon has made a donation of GHC10,000 to the national cathedral project.

The donation was made on his behalf by the paramount chief of Sagnarigu Traditional area, Naa Yakubu Abdulai  at the official launch  of the fund raising activities towards the construction of the cathedral.

The board of trustees of the National Cathedral Secretariat last year rolled out the “Ketewa Biara Nsua” initiative to raise half of the US$200 million needed to build the edifice. Ghanaians are being encouraged to make donations of GHC100 towards the project.

Speaking at the launch of the project, Naa Yakubu Abdulai appealed to Ghanaians to contribute towards the building.

“If Christians come together under one roof and if Muslims come together under one roof, the two of them will collaborate greatly to promote national unity and transformation. I will therefore appeal to all of you to support this objective to open your wallets and pockets very wide and contribute generously to this laudable objective,” he said.

“The national chief Imam has shown us the lead, my brothers and sisters of the Christian community, I consider it as your bounding duty to rise up and join the fund raising and cathedral community and say together as one let us rise and build,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and MMDCEs in the region donated GHC10,000 and GHC20,000 respectively towards the project.

The national cathedral is expected to be unveiled on 6 March 2024.

We’ve never received any money from LGBTQ+ community

Rev. Kusi Boateng, secretary to the board of trustees of the National Cathedral  Secretariat has dispelled rumours that the LGBTQ+ community had made some cash contribution to support the building of the National Cathedral project.

He has thrown a challenge to anyone with evidence of the said donation to bring it forth.

Speaking with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show Thursday (23 December), Rev. Kusi Boateng said, “Since this LGBTQ+ thing came in almost all the members of the board of trustees have come publicly to say we need this bill. So it will be conflicting for people to start circulating that the board of trustees have accepted the injection of monies from the LGBTQ+ community.

“So I say with authority that the LGBTQ+ community has never confronted us and has never given us a dollar. And if by chance anybody has any kind of evidence that the National Cathedral has received even a dollar from the LGBTQ+ community, I’ll resign the same day”

He, therefore, called on all Ghanaians to continue to support the National Cathedral project adding “all that I’m appealing to people is that let us all support. You can support by donating through *979#. We want one million Ghanaians to give us just GHC100 and some are giving us more than that.”

“The ownership [of the National Cathedral] is not for the government; ownership is for the Christian body although the government will be using the facility for state funerals, Christian gatherings and rentals for a lot of things,” Rev Boateng added.”
