Youth advocate warns against political party influence on campuses
Henry Edmund Nana Akuffo, a youth advocate has urged students to not be used as election season heats up
Henry Edmund Nana Akuffo, the president of the Association of Philosophy and Classics at the University of Ghana (APHICLAS-UG), has voiced concerns about the growing influence of political parties on university campuses.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Monday (12 August), Akuffo criticised the practice, labelling it as “uncalled for.”
Akuffo, a prominent youth advocate, acknowledged the significant role young people play in shaping political agendas.
However, he warned that students who become deeply involved in campus politics risk losing sight of their primary purpose for attending university: education.
“I think that the hijacking of the various campuses by political parties in this particular country is becoming so uncalled for,” Akuffo stated.
He expressed concern over the negative impact of such influence, noting that many students involved in campus political activities often neglect their academic responsibilities.
“I am a young person who is currently on [the] road in a tertiary institution, and the on-campus atmosphere is so bad that some of these students who are involved in the active political agendas on campus tend to even forget the purpose why they are in school.”
Akuffo also highlighted a disturbing trend where political figures exploit students for their personal gain, only to abandon them once their objectives are met.
“These people employ or engage students or the youth on campus for their personal or parochial interest and then they tend to ignore them after the purpose of they engaging the youth is achieved,” he said.
In light of the upcoming elections, Akuffo urged students to exercise caution and not allow themselves to be used as political tools.
“This particular year’s election is a very, very, very serious one and I think that I would rather advise the youth, especially my colleagues on campus, that they should be very careful so that they will not be used as a bait for fishing,” he advised.
